People ask us at the booth how flexi toys are made, usually while they are bending one back and forth in their hands. The question behind the question is normally the same: where are the hinges, and how did they get in there without anyone assembling them. The answer is that nobody assembled anything. The joints were built during the print, in place, and the piece came off the printer already moving.
This post follows one flexi from a licensed digital file to the box on your doorstep. It is the same path every piece takes, whether it is a $1 Micro turtle or a six inch dragon, and it explains why a printed-to-order shop works differently from a shelf of stock toys.
A flexi toy is not assembled, it is grown in one piece, and almost everything that decides its quality happens before the printer starts.
Where the File Comes From, and Why the License Matters
Every design we sell was drawn by somebody. We buy commercial licenses from the designers whose work we print, including Cinderwing3D, Flexi Factory, Lightspeed, Pawpular Prints, Printverse, STLFLIX and Zou3D. That license is what makes it legal for us to sell a print of their model, and it means a share of what you pay reaches the person who designed the creature.
Copied files are everywhere in this hobby, and they are usually recognisable by a price that makes no sense and a seller who cannot name the designer. We can name ours, and the authorized seller badges on the home page are the designers confirming it.
A license does not include the printing. The designer supplies a model. Turning that model into a piece that moves smoothly is our job, and that is where the rest of this post goes.
Slicing Turns a Model Into Instructions
A printer cannot read a 3D model. It follows a long list of movements, and the software that converts one into the other is called a slicer. The name is literal: it cuts the model into horizontal layers, each a fraction of a millimeter thick, and works out the path the nozzle takes to draw every one.
Layer height sets the trade. Thinner layers record more detail and take longer, because there are more of them to draw. On a scaled creature or a skeleton dinosaur the difference is visible along a curve, so detail-heavy designs earn the extra time.
Orientation decides where the strength goes. A print is strong across a layer and weaker between layers, so the way a piece sits on the plate changes which parts of it resist a bend. Tails, necks and wings are the parts that care.
Supports are a last resort. Anything that overhangs steeply needs temporary scaffolding, and every support leaves a mark where it is removed. Good flexi designs are drawn to need as few as possible, which is part of what separates a well made model from a pretty one.
How Flexi Toys Are Made on the Print Plate
Once a piece is sliced, it has to share a plate. This is the part most people never picture, and it is where a printed-to-order shop either runs efficiently or wastes a lot of filament.
Same color, same plate. A printer lays down one color at a time, so orders group by color rather than by customer. Three people who all asked for a deep purple axolotl are printed together, and a single custom request in a color nobody else ordered gets a plate of its own.
Size decides the company it keeps. Micro and Mini pieces are small enough that a plate holds many at once. A six inch X-Large or a shelf-sized dragon fills the space by itself, which is most of why the big sizes cost what they do.
Rainbow is a different job. The rainbow options use filament that changes color along its own length, so the pattern lands where it lands. That is what the Will Vary note on those options means, and it is why two rainbow prints of the same creature never match.
The Print Runs for Hours, Usually Overnight
Printing is slow in a way that surprises people who have only seen it sped up in a video. The nozzle draws one thin line at a time, and a finished creature is hundreds or thousands of those lines stacked up.
Small pieces are measured in hours. A pocket-sized flexi is a short job, which is how a Micro can sell for $1 and still make sense.
Large pieces hold a printer for most of a day. Doubling the length of a model multiplies its volume, so an X-Large is not twice the work of a Regular, it is closer to eight times. Plenty of our printing happens overnight for that reason.
A failure costs the whole print. If a piece comes loose from the plate partway through, or a layer does not bond, the result is scrap and the job starts again. This is ordinary in 3D printing, and it is one reason we do not promise same-day turnaround.
Print-in-Place Joints Live in Fractions of a Millimeter
This is the heart of the craft. A print-in-place joint is a ball and socket, or a hinge, printed with a deliberate gap between the two halves so they never fuse. When it works, the joint frees itself the first time you flex the piece.
Too tight and it welds. If the gap closes, the joint becomes one solid lump and the creature does not move. Sometimes a careful first flex breaks it free, and sometimes the piece is scrap.
Too loose and it flops. A joint with too much clearance will not hold a pose, which on a dragon or a snake ruins the point of the design.
The window is tiny, and it shifts with the filament, the size of the piece and the temperature in the room. A design that moves perfectly at Regular size can need a different approach when it is scaled to X-Large. This is the single biggest difference between a shop that prints flexis regularly and someone printing their first one.
Every Piece Is Inspected Joint by Joint
When a plate finishes, the pieces come off and get checked by hand. Not glanced at, but worked through joint by joint.
We flex every joint along the body, because a stiff one needs freeing before it ships, not after it arrives. On a long snake or a dragon tail that is a lot of joints on a single piece.
We look along the surface for the flaws that come from a print going slightly wrong: a rough patch where a support sat, a seam that stands proud, a layer that shifted. A piece with any of those does not go in a box.
Rejects get reprinted. Because nothing is made until it is ordered, a failed piece means printing yours again rather than reaching for another one off a shelf. That is the cost of printed to order, and it is also the reason what arrives has been looked at by a person.
Packing, Shipping and Booth Pickup
Flexi toys are tougher than they look, but they still travel better with their joints supported, so pieces are packed to stop them rattling against each other in transit.
Orders ship in one to three business days. That window is printing time, not handling time, and a large piece or an unusual custom color sits at the longer end of it. Shipping is free over $100.

Common Questions About How Flexi Toys Are Made
Are the joints glued or assembled after printing?
No. The gaps between the moving parts are printed into the piece, so it comes off the plate as one object that already bends. Nothing is glued, clipped or assembled at any stage.
What material do you print in?
Premium PLA. It holds fine detail, comes in the widest range of colors, and is the right choice for a toy that lives indoors. It softens above roughly 140 degrees Fahrenheit, which is why a hot car is the one place a flexi should never be left.
Why does a custom color take the same time as a stock one?
Because nothing is pre-made. Every order is printed after it is placed, so a color nobody has ordered before is no more work than the default. Type what you want in the Custom color box and it costs nothing extra.
Can you print any size of any creature?
Not always. Each design has sizes it prints well at, which is why the size ladders differ between families. The size guide lays out which creatures come in which sizes.
Why Printed to Order Is the Point
Knowing how flexi toys are made explains most of what looks unusual about buying one. The wait exists because your piece did not exist when you ordered it. The color options are wide because nothing was committed to plastic in advance. The sizes are priced the way they are because print time, not packaging, is the real cost.
It also explains what you are not getting: a warehouse item that sat in a carton for a year, in whichever three colors sold best. You are getting one piece, printed for your order, in the color you asked for.
