Backpack Keychain Guide: 19 Backpack Buddies That Click, $6 Each

Backpack Buddies That Click: blog cover from Cosmic 3D Creations with Capybara, Penguin and Turtle Backpack Buddies clicker keychains clipped to a blue school backpack

A backpack keychain should be small, sturdy and fun to grab. Our new Backpack Buddies are a tiny printed backpack with an animal peeking out of the top pocket, on a keyring with a swivel clip. Each one is a clicker you can fidget with, there are 19 buddies to choose from, and every one is $6.

This post is for parents looking for a stocking stuffer or a back-to-school treat, kids who want something on their bag that is theirs, and adults who clip things to a lanyard or purse. It covers what each buddy looks like, why a clicker works on a bag, how colors work, what sets cost, and when to order for Christmas. Pick the buddy by the animal the person already loves, because each backpack is decorated to match the animal inside it.

What Our Backpack Keychain Is

Each Backpack Buddy is a miniature backpack printed in premium PLA, with a carry handle on top, a front pocket and a round opening where the animal sits. The animal rests its paws on the front flap, as if it is riding along. A metal keyring and a swivel clip come attached.

It is a clicker, not a flexi. Most of what we print bends at joints and moves silently. A Backpack Buddy holds its shape and clicks when you fidget with it, so the fun is in the sound and the feel. It belongs to the same family as the bookshelves and lunchboxes in our post on clicker fidget toys, and it is the smallest and lowest-priced clicker we make.

There is one menu. On the product page, the Buddy menu lists all 19 animals. Every choice is $6, and choosing one shows its photo. The page does not give an inch measurement; think of it as keychain-sized, small enough to hang from a zipper pull without weighing down the bag.

Nineteen Backpack Buddies, Sorted by Theme

Each backpack is themed to its animal, so the pack itself tells you who is inside. Here they are in five groups, so you can find the right one quickly.

Farm: Black and White Cow, Highland Cow, Pig and Duck

The Highland Cow sits in a brown backpack with a horseshoe and stars across the top and a cow-spotted front pocket, its shaggy fringe falling over its eyes. It is a good pick for anyone who already loves our Highland Cow flexis. The Black and White Cow, the Pig and the Duck round out the barnyard.

Woodland and Garden: Fox, Owl, Hedgehog, Bunny and Frog

The Fox rides in an orange backpack with fox ears and a cream pocket printed with pine trees. The Owl's brown pack has tufted ears, feather marks along the sides and a pocket with an orange crescent moon. The Frog's green pack has two big frog eyes on top and a pink pocket with a flower and a buzzing fly. The Hedgehog and the Bunny complete this group.

Water and Ice: Blue Axolotl, Pink Axolotl, Turtle and Penguin

The Penguin sits in a light blue pack with snowflakes and a tiny igloo on the pocket. The Turtle's pack is the most playful: the pocket is a green shell, and little turtle legs stick out from the sides and bottom. The Pink Axolotl rides in a lavender pack trimmed with seashells. The Blue Axolotl is its partner in blue.

Pets: Cat, Dog and Capybara

The Capybara peeks out of an orange pack with round ears, small cream flowers and a pocket with an orange fruit on it. The Cat and the Dog are the pet picks for a child who wants their own animal on their bag.

Monsters: Green, Light Green and Orange

The Green Monster has four eyes and sits in a blue pack covered in yellow spots, with a green splat on the pocket. The Orange Monster is spiky, with small fangs, and rides in a purple pack with pink bat wings and a skull and crossed candy canes on the pocket. The Light Green Monster makes three. The monsters suit kids who like their cute with a little bit of spooky.

Why a Clicker Makes a Good Backpack Keychain

A backpack zip is one of the easiest places for any keychain. It hangs outside the bag, rarely knocks against anything hard, and mostly swings. A Backpack Buddy suits that spot for three reasons.

It has a rounded shape. A flexi has joints and tails that can catch on a zipper or a strap. A Backpack Buddy is a compact, rounded block, so there is less to snag when the bag is stuffed in a cubby or under a seat.

It is easy to reach for. Hanging on the outside of the bag, it is right there for a few clicks while waiting for the bus or in the pickup line, and it goes back to hanging when the hands are busy again.

The swivel clip moves it around. The clip opens and closes, so the buddy can move from a backpack to a lunch bag, a lanyard, a purse strap or a set of keys without tools.

Two cautions. A clicker makes a sound, so in a quiet classroom or a library a silent flexi is the better fidget; check the school's rule before it comes out at a desk. And PLA softens above about 140°F, so a backpack left in a parked car in summer is the one place a buddy can lose its shape. For young children: it has small parts and is not for children under 3, and it is not a chew toy for pets.

Choosing Colors for a Backpack Keychain

Every buddy is printed in the colors shown in its photo, so what you see on the product page is what we print by default. You do not need to type anything to get those colors.

To change the backpack color, type it in the Custom color box above Add to cart. A child whose school colors are maroon and gold, or who wants a pink backpack for the fox, can ask for it there. Color does not change the price.

If a color is out, we message you with the closest match before printing, so nothing goes out in a shade you did not expect.

Keep the animal recognizable. The animal's own colors are part of what makes it read as a penguin or a highland cow. Changing the backpack keeps the character; changing the animal too can make it harder to tell which buddy it is. If you are unsure, message us before you order and describe what you have in mind.

Pairing a Backpack Buddy With a Matching Flexi

Many of the buddies have a flexi cousin in our catalog. Putting the two together makes a small gift set: one on the bag, one on the shelf at home.

Capybara. Our classic Capybara flexi comes in six sizes from a $1 Micro to a $15 X-Large, with the 3 inch Large at $7.

Penguin, Fox, Turtle, Cat and Pig. Each is on the same six-size menu, with the 3 inch Large at $6 and a Keychain option at $7.

Duck and Frog. The Duck's Large is $7. The Frog's Large is $6.

Highland Cow and Owl. The Highland Cow flexi is $7 in Brown Mix, Brown or Rainbow, where the colors vary from piece to piece. The Owl is a single $12 design.

Check the size menu on each flexi page for the exact inch measurement and price before you choose. Every flexi has its own Custom color box, so you can match the flexi to the backpack color you picked.

What a Backpack Keychain Costs, Set by Set

Every buddy is $6, so the math stays simple. Shipping is free Economy on orders of $35 or more, and $3.99 below that.

$6: one buddy. A stocking stuffer or a small just-because gift. Shipping adds $3.99.

$13: a buddy and its flexi. The Capybara Backpack Buddy at $6 and a Large Capybara flexi at $7. Shipping adds $3.99.

$18: three buddies for three siblings. A Penguin, a Fox and a Pink Axolotl, so nobody argues over whose is whose. Shipping adds $3.99.

$36: six buddies. Enough for a small party's favor bags or a whole team's bags, and the order clears $35, so Economy shipping is free.

Each buddy is its own line in the cart. Choose the animal, add it, then go back to the Buddy menu for the next one. Each line has its own Custom color box.

When to Order a Backpack Keychain for Christmas

Every buddy is printed after you order, so allow time for both printing and the mail.

Printing and checking take one to three business days. We check every piece before it ships.

For Christmas stockings, ordering by the end of November leaves room for the slower December mail and for a reprint if anything arrives broken.

Booth pickup. We are at Canton Trade Days October 29 to November 1 and December 3 to 6, booth 4268/4269. To collect your order at the booth instead of having it shipped, message us before you order. Our event dates page has the full schedule.

Common Questions About Backpack Buddies

How big is a Backpack Buddy?

The product page does not list a measurement. It is keychain-sized: made to hang from a zipper pull, lanyard or key ring.

Does it move like a flexi?

No. It is a clicker fidget toy. It holds its shape and clicks when you fidget with it. If you want something that bends and poses, pair it with a flexi of the same animal.

Can I get a different backpack color?

Yes. Type the color in the Custom color box above Add to cart. If that color is out, we message you with the closest match before printing.

What if it arrives broken?

We reprint it free. Message us through our contact page and tell us what happened.
