Name Desk Sign Guide: Letter Count, Colors and Where It Stands

Name Desk Sign Guide: blog cover from Cosmic 3D Creations with a pink leopard and teal 3D printed name desk sign on a desk

A name desk sign is a name that stands up on its own. Ours is a freestanding 3D printed sign with thick letters that sit upright on a desk, shelf or dresser, and the price depends only on how long the name is: $8 for 1 to 4 letters, $15 for 5 to 8 letters, and $18 for 9 or more.

This post is for parents decorating a child's room, students and staff thanking a teacher, and anyone setting up a new office. It covers how the price works, how to type the name, which colors read well, where a sign earns its spot, and when to order before Christmas. Count the letters in the name before you open the product page, because the length you choose sets the price and has to match the name you type.

What Our Name Desk Sign Is

Our Name Desk Sign is a one-piece print in premium PLA. The letters are thick enough to stand without a base or a stand, so the name itself is the sign. Set it on a flat surface and it stays put.

It is not a flexi toy. Most of what we sell is articulated and bends at the joints; the desk sign is solid and is made to be looked at, not handled all day. If you want something on the same desk that moves, pair it with a fidget or a flexi, which we cover further down.

How it differs from our Name Keychain. The Name Keychain sits flat inside a border and clips to a bag, at one price of $8. The desk sign stands upright with no border and is priced by length. One labels what someone carries; the other marks where they sit.

Name Desk Sign Prices Go by the Length of the Name

The product page has one menu, Name length, with three choices. The price steps up with the length of the name, not with the colors.

1 to 4 letters is $8. Ava, Liam, Mia, Noah and Zoe all land here, along with short nicknames.

5 to 8 letters is $15. Olivia, Garcia, Isabella and Benjamin fall in this band. Most first names do.

9 or more letters is $18. Elizabeth, Christopher and Alexander are here, as are many first and last names written together.

Whatever the band, the name has to fit in 20 characters. If the name has a space, a hyphen, a title such as "Mrs." or initials, and you are not sure which length to choose, message us before you order and we will tell you.

How to Type the Name So It Prints Right

Below the Name length menu, just above Add to cart, there is a box labeled Name to print. We print exactly what you type there, so a minute of checking saves a reprint.

Capitals print as typed. "Ava" prints as Ava and "AVA" prints in all capitals. Most people want the first letter capitalized and the rest lowercase.

Copy the name from something written. Kaitlyn, Caitlin and Katelyn are all common spellings. If the sign is for someone else's child, ask a parent or copy it from a class list.

Match the length to the name. A seven-letter name needs the 5 to 8 letters option, not 1 to 4. Check that the two agree before you add the sign to the cart.

We do not correct spelling, because a name that looks unusual to us may be exactly right for the person. Read the box once more before you press Add to cart.

Choosing Colors for a Name Desk Sign

Type the colors you want in the Custom color box on the product page. Color does not change the price. If a color is out when your order comes up, we message you with the closest match.

Two looks we have already printed are shown on the product page. One is a rounded script with a teal body and a pink leopard print face. The other is bold black block letters on white. You can ask for either one by name.

Contrast keeps the name readable. A sign is read from across a desk or a room, so a dark color against a light one works better than two similar shades. Black and white is the easiest to read; teal with pink is softer and still clear.

Match the room or the person. School colors suit a teacher's desk, team colors suit a bedroom shelf, and a favorite color is never wrong for a child. If you have a different style in mind, describe it in the Custom color box, or message us first if you are not sure we can do it.

Where a Name Desk Sign Fits

A name desk sign does the most good wherever a name helps someone feel at home or helps others find them.

A teacher's desk. Students see the name every day, and it is a gift a child can help choose. Pick the length by the name the class uses, such as the last name alone.

A child's room. On a dresser or bookshelf, a name in their favorite colors makes the room theirs. Siblings sharing a room can each have their own in different colors.

A new office or reception desk. A sign marks a workspace on the first day, before the nameplate from the office arrives. A whole team can order in matching colors.

Party place cards. A short-name sign at each seat shows guests where to sit and goes home with them as a favor. At $8 for a name of four letters or fewer, eight guests come to $64, which ships free.

One caution for any of these spots: PLA softens above about 140°F. Keep the sign off a sunny window ledge in summer and out of a parked car. Dust it with a soft, dry cloth.

Pairing a Name Desk Sign With a Fidget Tower or a Flexi

A sign on its own is a fine gift. Adding something to keep hands busy makes a fuller desk set without costing much.

The Fidget Tower. Our Fidget Tower is a stacked twisting fidget with spiral pieces in a contrasting color, made to be turned over in your hand. It is $8 in Square, Diamond or Round, and it suits a student or anyone who clicks pens in meetings.

A flexi beside the name. A Large flexi, such as the 3 inch Neon Stripe Axolotl at $6, black with a lime green stripe down its back, gives the desk something that bends and holds a pose.

Here is what three desk sets cost:

$16: a short name and a Fidget Tower. "Mia" at $8 plus a tower at $8. Shipping adds $3.99.

$29: a medium name, a tower and a flexi. "Olivia" at $15, a tower at $8 and a Large Neon Stripe Axolotl at $6. Shipping adds $3.99.

$37: the same set plus a Name Keychain. Add an $8 Name Keychain in the same colors and the order clears $35, so Economy shipping is free.

Matching the colors across the set makes it read as one gift. Give each item its own colors in its own Custom color box.

When to Order a Name Desk Sign for Christmas

Every sign is printed after you order, so allow time for both printing and the mail.

Printing and checking take one to three business days. We check every letter before it ships.

Transit usually takes two to five business days, and December is slower for every carrier.

For Christmas or the last day before winter break, ordering by the end of November leaves room for the holiday mail and for a reprint if anything arrives broken.

Booth pickup. We are at Canton Trade Days October 29 to November 1 and December 3 to 6, booth 4268/4269. To collect your sign there instead of having it shipped, message us before you order. Our event dates page has the full schedule.

Common Questions About the Name Desk Sign

How do I know which name length to pick?

Count the letters in the name as you will type it. Up to four is $8, five to eight is $15, and nine or more is $18. If the name has a space, hyphen or title, message us and we will tell you which to choose.

Can I order several names in one order?

Yes. Add each name as its own line in the cart, each with its own Name length, Name to print and Custom color box.

Will it stand up on its own?

Yes. The letters are thick and the sign is freestanding, so it sits upright on a desk, shelf or dresser without a stand.

What if it arrives broken?

We reprint it free. Message us through our contact page and tell us what happened.

Count the Letters, Then Choose the Colors

A name desk sign is a simple gift that gets seen every day. The name tells everyone whose desk or room it is, and the colors make it feel like theirs.

Count the letters to pick the price, copy the spelling from something written down, give us two colors with good contrast, and order by the end of November for Christmas.

At Cosmic 3D Creations, every Name Desk Sign is printed to order in Como, Texas, checked letter by letter, and shipped within one to three business days. Tell us your colors in the Custom color box, or message us to collect your sign at our Canton Trade Days booth.
