Introduction
If you have searched for pocket friends and landed here, you probably saw a tiny articulated animal in someone's hand, on a keyring, or lined up along the edge of a desk, and wanted to know what it was. Pocket friends are small 3D printed flexi animals, usually between 1 and 2 inches long, printed in one piece with working joints so they bend, curl, and wiggle. They are the smallest things we make, and on a busy weekend at our booth they are also the things we sell the most of.
This post explains what pocket friends are, which sizes qualify, why they are so satisfying to carry, which designs people reach for first, and how we print and check something that small. We will also answer the questions we hear most often from parents, teachers, and collectors who are picking out their first one.
The short version: a pocket friend is any flexi small enough to live in a pocket or on a keyring without getting in the way, and the sweet spot for most people is our 1.5 inch Mini or 2 inch Regular size.
What Are Pocket Friends, Exactly
A pocket friend is a print-in-place articulated animal at a small scale. Print-in-place means the whole creature comes off the printer already assembled. There is no glue, no pins, and no snapping parts together. The joints are printed as a chain of interlocking segments with a hair of clearance between them, and once the print cools you flex it a few times and it moves.
At full size, that articulation is what makes a flexi dragon curl around a coffee mug or a flexi shark swim across a shelf. At pocket scale, the same joints turn the animal into a fidget you can carry everywhere. The body wraps around a finger, the segments click gently when you roll them, and the whole thing weighs almost nothing.
The name comes from customers rather than from us. People started calling the small ones their pocket friends because that is where they lived, and the name stuck. We now group every design that prints well at pocket scale into a single Pocket Friends collection so you can browse them in one place.
Which Sizes Count as Pocket Friends
Most of our classic flexi animals come in a ladder of sizes, and the bottom three rungs are what we consider pocket friends. The measurement on the product page is the approximate nose-to-tail length with the body laid out straight.
Micro (1 inch) is the true miniature. A Micro sits on a fingertip and its joints are so small you can barely see the seams. Micros are wonderful as cake toppers, party favors, and dollhouse accessories, and a jar of them makes a fun prize box. They are more decoration than fidget, because the segments are too small to get much movement out of.
Mini (1.5 inch) is where the articulation starts to feel real. A Mini still hides inside a closed fist, but the extra half inch gives each joint enough travel that the animal actually curls and wags. This is the size most people mean when they search for mini pocket friends figurines, and it is the size we recommend for treat bags, classroom rewards, and anyone who wants something to fiddle with in a meeting.
Regular (2 inch) is the largest size we would still call a pocket friend. It has the same detail as the bigger sizes, rides comfortably in a jeans pocket, and is heavy enough to feel like a proper little toy. If the pocket friend is for an older child or an adult who wants satisfying movement, Regular is the safe choice.
Keychain versions are pocket friends with a ring attached. Most classic designs offer one, and the keychain size is usually close to a Regular with a printed loop at the head or tail. Why Small Articulated Animals Feel So Good in the Hand
There is a reason people keep a pocket friend within reach all day. The appeal is physical, not just cute.
The joints give feedback. Each segment on a flexi clicks softly past the next as you bend it. Rolling a Mini axolotl between your fingers gives a steady, quiet rhythm that is easy to keep going without looking, which is exactly what a good desk fidget does.
It is silent enough for anywhere. Unlike a clicky pen or a spinner, a flexi makes almost no noise. Teachers and office workers tell us that is the main reason they carry one instead of a louder toy.
It is light and it does not break. PLA at this scale is tough. A pocket friend can be dropped, sat on, and lost at the bottom of a bag for a month and come out ready to move. The joints are the strongest part of the design, not the weakest.
Mini Pocket Friends Figurines: The Designs People Carry Most
Almost every classic animal we print is available at pocket scale, so the choice is really about personality. These are the ones that leave the booth in the greatest numbers.
Axolotl is the runaway favorite. The frilly gills and wide smile survive the shrink to Mini size, and the long tail gives the joints plenty to do. We print a plain axolotl, an axolotl with a line down its back, and an axolotl with legs, so there is a version for every taste.
Otter, seal, and manatee are the smooth ones. Rounded bodies with no spikes or fins to catch on fabric make them the best behaved in a pocket, and their simple shapes look good in any color.

T-Rex, triceratops, and stegosaurus are the pocket dinosaurs. Small children pick these out from across the aisle, and a handful of Mini dinos in different colors is a classic birthday party set.

Shark, jellyfish, and narwhal round out the ocean set. The shark looks even better small, because its long body packs in a lot of joints.
Choosing a Pocket Friend for a Child, a Desk, or a Bag
The right pocket friend depends on where it is going to live. Here is how we steer people at the booth.
For a young child, choose Regular. It is big enough to grip properly and has no loose parts, since the whole animal is one piece. Skip Micro entirely for anyone under three, because a 1 inch print is small enough to be a swallowing hazard. Pick a smooth design like the otter or seal, and choose a bright color so it is easy to spot on the floor.
For a desk, Mini is ideal. It stays out of the way of a keyboard, it is quiet, and it is easy to pick up without looking. Many people keep two or three in different colors and rotate them.
For a bag or keys, get the Keychain version. The printed loop is part of the design, so there is no glued hardware to fail. A pocket friend on a keyring also makes keys easier to find by feel in a purse.

How We Print Something This Small
Printing a pocket friend is harder than printing a large flexi, not easier. At 6 inches the joint clearance is a comfortable gap. At 1.5 inches that same clearance shrinks to a fraction of a millimeter, and the printer has to lay down each layer accurately enough that the segments stay separate without fusing.
We print every pocket friend in PLA, which holds fine detail well and gives the joints a clean, slightly firm feel. Small prints share a plate with others of the same color, but each one is still made to order in the color you picked.
Inspection matters more at this scale than any other. When a plate of pocket friends comes off the printer, we flex every joint on every animal by hand. A joint that fused during printing will not free up on its own, and a joint that is too loose will feel floppy, so either one goes back to be reprinted. We also check for stringing between segments, which is the fine hair of plastic that can appear when the nozzle travels across a gap, and clean it off before packing.

Keeping a Pocket Friend Moving After Months in a Pocket
A pocket friend leads a rougher life than a shelf piece. Lint, crumbs, and the occasional trip through the washing machine are all part of the job. The good news is that PLA handles this well, and the fixes are simple.
Lint in the joints is the most common complaint. Roll the animal under warm running water, flex it a few times, and pat it dry. Do not use hot water, because PLA softens well below boiling and a joint can deform.
A stiff joint after a long time in a pocket usually just needs to be worked. Bend it gently back and forth a dozen times and it will loosen. If it does not, there is probably lint packed inside, and the water trick above will clear it.
A hot car is the one real danger. A pocket friend left on a dashboard in a Texas summer can warp. Keep it in the pocket or the bag, not on the dash, and it will last for years.

Common Pocket Friends Questions
Are pocket friends safe for young kids?
Regular and Mini sizes are one solid piece with no small parts that can come off, and PLA is a plant-based plastic. That said, a Micro is small enough to swallow, and we do not recommend any pocket friend for children who still put toys in their mouths. For toddlers, choose Regular and supervise.
What is the difference between a Mini and a keychain?
A Mini is a 1.5 inch version of a classic design with no ring. A keychain is a version of the design with a printed loop and a ring attached, usually closer to Regular size. The separate Mini series, such as the Mini Cat and Mini Raccoon, are their own designs with a keychain option you can add or leave off.
